Wild rice (Poaceae)

Origin :

Wild rice (Poaceae ) is a wholesome rice that possess a lot of nutritional value. It originates from the grass family, which is one of four species from the Zizania Palustis L. ,Indian rice ,Chinese rice and water oats. Wild rice comes from the great lakes of North America. In the Caribbean it is grown in Guyana and found it’s way to Jamaica through trade.

Health Benefits:

Poaceae (wild rice) is used as an inflammatory agent and can protect against diseases. It is also used as food that can reduce birth defects. According to Studies myths from the North America natives said that it is food from the Creator.

Uses:

In Jamaica Wild rice (Poaceae) is a popular delicacy seasoned with coconut milk to prepare rice and peas. Other dishes can be a recipe and delighted as a dessert, salad and Sunday evening dinner from the wild rice.

Hazards:

Wild rice (Poaceae) can be contaminated through fungus called Ergot. It can be identified by the purplish or pinkish spot on the outer shell. The fact that the grass is grown in shallow great lakes or swampy area can result in this disease.

How to prepare Wild rice ( Poaceae):

Wild rice can be used to prepare several dishes. Due to the nature of the rice, it as to be shelled and washed in cold water before it can be cooked.

Caution:

Not edible as is, wild rice has to be cooked to be eaten with or as a food.
